THE BENEFITS OF CRYOTHERAPY

Cryotherapy (cold treatment) has been known since antiquity but only began to be applied to medicine in the 1970s. Through vasomotor, biochemical and neuroconduction phenomena, cold produces several particularly beneficial effects. in traumatology and postoperative follow-ups:

     – Analgesic effect: the lowering of the temperature locally causes a sort of anesthesia, which produces an analgesic effect (reduction of pain).

     – Effect anti-hemorrhagic : the temperature and the rate of tissue cooling influence the vasomotor effects which, associated with pressure, generate vasoconstriction causing a reduction in blood flow.

     – Muscle relaxant effect: following the application of cold, spinal reflex pathways produce a strong inhibition of gamma motor neurons and consequently a significant reduction in muscle tone; this has the effect of stimulating the healing of muscles and tissues.

     – Anti-inflammatory effect: cold reduces metabolic activity by generating a strong decrease in the enzymes responsible for inflammation and their activity. Post-operatively, the inflammatory reaction has the role of evacuating “waste” from the body. It is therefore not a question of preventing it but on the contrary of encouraging it. After surgery, the inflammatory reaction is accompanied by side effects: edema, redness and warmth. Applying cold will help reduce swelling and lower the temperature. The inflammatory reaction can then continue, and help eliminate waste following the intervention, thus promoting recovery.

The combination of these effects allows our devices to be an essential tool for faster recovery with easier and less painful rehabilitation.
